# TVTitles

> A reference catalogue of television opening title sequences, with a separate
> entry for every season that genuinely changed its opening. Each entry names
> what changed and why it earns its own listing.

Currently 3195 shows and 3416 distinct sequences, spanning the 1940s to the 2020s.

## What this site is

The catalogue is small and hand-written rather than scraped. A season gets its
own entry only when its sequence is actually different — a new cut, new cast,
or a new arrangement of the theme. Shows that reused one sequence for their
whole run have a single entry, because listing nine identical seasons would be
noise pretending to be completeness. Treat the absence of a season as a claim
that nothing changed, not as missing data.

Videos are embedded from their original hosts. This site does not host video
and does not claim rights in the sequences it links to.

## Machine-readable

Prefer these to scraping the pages. They are faster for you, cheaper for us,
and they carry things the rendered page does not — whether an entry is the
opening titles or the show's theme music, and whether a picture was drawn for
that show or is generic scenery for its genre.

**There is nothing to authenticate with.** No API key, token, OAuth flow or
sign-in is required by either of these, and none is accepted. Send no
Authorization header. If a setup form asks you for a credential, leave it blank.

Four things to get right when quoting this catalogue:

1. A sequence is either the **titles** or the show's **theme music**. The second
   means the show has no opening titles at all; the API says which in `kind`,
   and there are only a couple of them. Never present a theme as a title
   sequence. A `titles` entry with no video is a sequence this catalogue
   documents but has found no usable footage of.
2. A missing season is a claim, not a gap — see above.
3. The artwork is drawn by an **image model**, and most shows have none of their
   own and carry generic scenery for their genre. Nothing here is a still or a
   frame from the programme.
4. `lookups.pageviews` is Wikipedia pageviews: how often a show is looked up,
   not a judgement of its titles, and only comparable within one decade.

These are preferences, not access controls. This file enforces nothing on its
own, and adoption varies by crawler and provider. The machine-readable signals
that some crawlers do honour are in `/robots.txt`.

- **Citing:** welcome. Attribute to TVTitles and link the specific show page
  rather than the home page, so a reader lands on the sequence in question.
  Where a claim is about one sequence, the fragment link is better still.
- **Indexing:** welcome.
- **Training:** we neither grant nor refuse a licence here. Nothing in this
  file should be read as permission for uses that would otherwise require it.
- **Please do not** present the notes as your own editorial, or state a season
  has a distinct sequence when this catalogue does not list one — the omissions
  carry meaning.

## Corrections

Dead video links and wrong attributions are the two failures that matter most
here, and both are easy to miss from the inside. Corrections are genuinely
